Causes of trauma in youth range from seeing a particularly violent episode on TV to civil war where one lives. 

  • What are the signs of trauma in a young person?
  • What must one know/feel/do to create a safe environment and avoid the fight or flight reaction that is typical of traumatized youth?
  • What are best evidence-based practices/interventions to assist to assuage the anxiety that accompanies traumatic stress?
  • When is referral necessary?
  • What can one do to help restore the executive function disturbance in the traumatic brain?
  • What resources exist for counselors and parents that can support them working with traumatized youth?

Martha Milli, NCC, has been an educator with the Baltimore County School System for the past 27 years. Twelve of those years were spent as an Early Childhood Educator and the last fifteen years have been spent as an Elementary School Counselor. In addition, Ms. Milli is an adjunct instructor, teaching Techniques of Counseling at Loyola University in Maryland. She has attended numerous workshops on Trauma through BCPS, BCACD, MSCA and ASCA.
